Obituary for Robert Merton Young

Robert Merton Young
Robert “Gramps” Young went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 7th, 2018, in a peaceful passing at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born in Greenville, Maine on December 8th, 1935 to Norman and Dorothy (Bragg) Young. He grew up in Corinna, Maine, and was a graduate of Corinna Union Academy and Beal College. Known to many as “Bob”, he worked in the banking industry for many before his retirement, and created many lasting friendships along the way. Bob was very proud to have served his country, having four years active duty in the US Air Force and 27 years with the Air National Guard. On February 14th, 1959, Robert married the love of his life, Doris Brockway. Together they raised three children that brought them great joy, Dianna, Donna, and Robbie. As much as Robert was proud of his kids and enjoyed being “Dad”, his true calling was that of “Gramps”, and he wore the title like a badge of honor. Simply put, he adored his grandchildren, and they adored him. Robert so loved his family and friends, his Lord and church, his country, his sports teams (all Bangor Schools athletics, and yes, the NY Yankees), his fellow veterans, and his community with such a strong and enduring love that there are many hearts hurting upon hearing of his passing. Robert will forever be missed by many, and his presence will be felt at the many athletic fields and courts where he cheered on his children and grandchildren, the neighborhood parks where he took them to play, the second-hand stores where he was always looking for that rare find he thought someone would like (though it had to be Made in America), and the many gun shops where Robert (aka The Yankee Trader) was known to buy high and sell low. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Doris Young; daughters Dianna Rybka and husband Walter, of Weeki Wachi, FL; Donna Young of Bangor, ME; and son Rob Young and his wife Stacey of Bangor, ME; His grandchildren and great-grandchild, who were the light of his life; Kyle and Jason Rybka, Joshua Young and his wife Kate; Zachary Young; and Gavin and Lillian Young; and great-grandson, Teddy Young. Also surviving Robert is his sister Donna Mullis and her husband Dalton; brother Donald Young and his wife Sharon; sisters-in-law Barbara Cloutier and Phyllis Clukey; many nieces, nephews and cousins, including a very special cousin, Marlene Pray. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 10-11 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2018, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, with Rev. Randall Wilbur officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., following the memorial service. Those who wish to remember Robert in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Essex Street Baptist Church, 82 Essex Street, Bangor, ME 04401 or Hospice of Eastern Maine, 885 Union Street #220, Bangor, ME 04401.
