Obituary for Richard Stephen Dekoschak

Richard Stephen Dekoschak
Levant – Richard S. Dekoschak, 80, died peacefully August 15, 2017, at a Bangor hospital. He was born January 2, 1937, in Elmira, New York, the son of Stephen and Lillian (Carpenter) Dekoschak. Richard graduated from Horseheads (NY) High School, class of 1954. One week later he and a couple friends joined the United States Marine Corps. When Richard finished his 3-year tour of duty with the Marines he took a management trainee position with F. W. Woolworth in Elmira. He loved telling people he “found his million dollar baby at the five and ten cent store”! He met Ann in July, they were engaged in August, and were married in January, 1958. In 1972 they moved to Maine from Elmira so Richard could manage Millers Department Store, in Brewer. The store was closed 10 years later, and Richard went to work at the base. He joined the Air National Guard, and he also went to work for U. S. Customs, a part-time job he held for 27 years. Richard retired from the Air National Guard after 17 years. He was a member of the Marine Corps League and the Brewer Eagles Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially bowling and golfing with Ann. He also paddled the Allagash a couple of times. Richard loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and was proud of every one of them. They will remember his harmonica and ukulele, that he was very musical, and that he was “the smartest of all”! In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by a daughter, Kimberly; and two brothers, Nick and Denny. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ann; his four children: son, Stephen Dekoschak, daughter, Christine Dekoschak, daughter, Celine Dube and husband, Robert, and son, Vincent Dekoschak; six grandchildren: Kari, Shawn, Kayla, Tanya, Devon, and Stephen; seven great grandchildren: Landon, Cameron, Gavin, Blake, Chloe, Harper, and Abigail; a sister, Tina Stanton; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with Rev. Art Gowie, chaplain at EMMC officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Waugh Cemetery, Levant. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the family home after the committal service.
