Obituary for Robert Charles Milsovic, M.D.
BANGOR – Dr. Robert C. Milsovic, 80, died peacefully after a long illness at the Maine Veterans’ Home on August 15, 2017. He was born on April 30, 1937 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Robert J. and Laura (Frederick) Milsovic.
Robert graduated from Bethel Park High School. His education continued at the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a B.S. in 1959 and a medical degree in 1963. He married Joan Gallaher in 1962.
From 1964 to 1966, Robert proudly served as a combat medical officer with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marines. While in Newfoundland and Cuba, he worked with the Seabees, and in Vietnam, Robert served with the Special Forces (Third Marines). Robert was awarded two Bronze Stars, one with Valor, a Purple Heart, and he was recently recognized by the state of Maine with a lifetime achievement award. The 101st Air National Guard Refueling Wing also recently recognized Robert for his steadfast example of sacrifice to his country.
Upon his return from Vietnam, Robert and Joan moved to Portland, Maine where Robert completed a radiology residency at the Maine Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital in Boston. After completing his residency, Robert, Joan, and their children moved to Bennington, Vermont. In 1978, the family moved to Meadville, PA where Robert worked in the Radiology Department of the Meadville Medical Center.
Robert was an avid outdoorsman and volunteer. He spent many years as a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America. One of his fondest memories was taking a group of scouts and leaders to Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. He and Joan retired to the coast of Maine. During his retirement, Robert and Joan enjoyed spending time in various fishing lodges all over the world. They also spent summers fishing on the Penobscot River.
Robert is survived by his wife, Joan (Gallaher), their four children, a granddaughter, and a sister.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Maine Veterans’ Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, Maine 04401.
