LaForest E. “Lee” Mathews

Bangor – LaForest E. Mathews III, 86, completed his journey to Heaven at home on July 19, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Brewer June 19, 1931, the son of Madeline E. Annis and LaForest E. Mathews II.
LaForest was educated in Brewer. He served two years of military service, then joined the Army National Guard and retired after 20 years. Lee was a truck driver for Merrill Transport / Superior Carriers for many years. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Brewer, past member and president of the Brewer Historical Society, past Chaplain and member of the American Legion Post 12, A 50+ year member of the Seashore Trolley Museum, The 470 Railroad Club and The Good Sams Club. He was also a volunteer at the Brewer Area Food Pantry.
LaForest is survived by the mother of his children, Ethel M. (Gray) Mathews of Bangor; loving and devoted children, Kenneth E and wife Mary of Warroad, MN; Jimmy D and wife Julie of Bangor, and Gerald L and wife Janice of Bay Point, CA; daughter Sally J of Poland. He is also survived by a son-at-heart Jeffrey Ashey and wife Leisa of Eddington; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, Lenly G. and wife Joan of FL; 1 nephew.
The family sends great thanks and appreciation to Drs. Westhoven and Martin at EMMC, VNA Home Hospice nurse Stacy and especially to Raymond Schultz, PAC at Orono Family Medicine.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 2 – 5 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church of Brewer, 40 South Main St., Brewer. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the fellowship hall, following the service. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
