Obituary for Dorothy Barbara Clark (Kitchen)

Brewer – Dorothy Clark, 87, passed away peacefully April 10, 2017 at her home in Brewer. Dot was born February 12, 1930, the daughter of Lewis Kitchen and Bessie (Tripp) Kitchen Sargent.

Dot was a graduate of Bangor High School, class of 1948, and enjoyed math, the sciences, and supporting the basketball teams. She continued her education at the School of Nursing at Eastern Maine General Hospital, graduating as an RN in 1951. Dot went on to work on the floor at EMGH, Stinson Hospital, and as a private duty nurse.

On December 7, 1951 Dot married Charles William “Bill” Clark and moved to Brewer where they planted roots in the Green Acres subdivision, raising two daughters and a son. Dot formed the first Diabetic teaching classes, along with Grace Morse, a Dietitian at EMMC. The program continued from 1969 thru 1980. The program focused on educating diabetics and their families about managing their daily lives.

In 1978, while working days and taking care of her household, she attended UMO and received her Bachelor of University Studies with distinction, and then continued her studies to obtain her Master of Education Degree for Nursing Instruction in May, 1984. Dot was employed for several years at EMGH School of Nursing as an instructor. Before retiring, she went on for several years as a State Public Health Nursing Supervisor.

In retirement, Dot and Bill enjoyed traveling the US, including Hawaii. Dot was also very active in the community with several organizations including: Red Hatters, Daughters of the Nile, Sears, Brewer Sewing Guild, Girls Scouts, and many more. Dot relaxed by growing both indoor and outdoor plants, and cherished doing sewing projects that she made for family and the community.

In addition to her parents, Dot was predeceased by her husband of more than 64 years, Bill; a son-in-law Nelson McLaughlin; a grandson Nelson McLaughlin, Jr.; a great grandson Samuel Taylor; a brother Malcolm Kitchen; and a brother-in-law, Robert Clark.

She is survived by daughter Cheryll McLaughlin; her son Scott Clark and wife Sharon; and daughter Barbara Carlow and husband Ron; 5 grandchildren: Noel Taylor and husband Alex, Ryann Chamberlain and husband Grant, Jessica Westman and husband Doug, Michelle Carlow and significant other Christopher Bryden, and Noah McLaughlin; 5 great grandchildren: Kaleb and Myranda Westman; and Natalie, Jack and Anna Taylor.
