Obituary for Elaine Davis Downs (Gould)

Elaine Davis Downs (Gould)
Elaine “Momsie” Downs, 82, died May 12, 2016, at her Avalon Village home after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. She was surrounded by family and friends and her loving husband of over 63 years, Henry “Popsie” Downs. She was born Dec. 6, 1933, in Portland, the daughter of Frank and Louise Gould.

Elaine lived a wonderful life raising five terrific children. She enjoyed going for walks, boating and traveling with friends, including her trip to Greece with a dear friend, Diane Reynolds; Germany and Austria with another dear friend, Sheila Rogers; France, Italy and England with her husband, Henry. After retirement, Momsie and Popsie motor-homed across the country, making fabulous memories along the way. Momsie re-counted the stories of her travels to her children and grandchildren with amusing recollection of the many adventures.

Elaine and Henry wintered in Lady Lake, Florida for twenty five years, but she always loved her Maine roots and was known to brag proudly of her uncle, Fred Goldrup, who made the first pair of LL Bean boots. Everyone who knew her loved her, and if you met her it wasn't long before you knew her. She approached life with an infectious gaiety and turned a lot of frowns into smiles as she passed by. She will be truly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Henry of Hampden; son, Scott and wife Cathy of Comfort, Texas; daughter, Diana and husband Dan Ober of Newburgh; daughter, Cache and husband Will of Bozeman, Montana; son, Chris and wife Lori of Brewer; son, Zouph and wife Lisa of Clinton; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to share in conversation and refreshments 6 – 8 pm, Monday, May 16, 2016 at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
