Obituary for Lawrence Franklin King

Lawrence Franklin King
Lawrence “Larry” Franklin King, 68, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2016 at his home attended by his loving family. He was the son of Eugene F. and Dorothy E. (Maddocks) King. Larry was born October 20, 1947, the day of the Bar Harbor Fire. Right after birth, he and his mother were transferred to Hancock Point on the Sunbeam to escape the approaching fire. Thus began his love of boating, which continued over his lifetime, concluding with a surprise Christmas gift for Nancy – a Caribbean cruise in January, 2016.

Larry was raised in Bar Harbor in the village of Salisbury Cove. He graduated from Bar Harbor High School and attended University of Southern Maine and then moved to New Hampshire to work for Ingersoll Rand. After 5 years he had an opportunity to go into business with his father at Associated Builders. He was joined by brothers, Bob and Doug. Larry was very proud of his family’s achievements and their business successes.

His decades of dedication to the City of Ellsworth began as a member of the Board of Appeals in 1976, and he served twice as Chair. In 1988, Larry was appointed to the Planning Board which he served until 1999, when he was elected to the City Council. He also led the Comprehensive Plan Committee from 1989 to 1992. During his seven years on the council, King was chairman from 2003 – 2005. He was a past president of the Ellsworth Chamber and the Ellsworth Rotary Club. Larry believed that you get out of the community what you’re willing to put into it. He served the community in so many ways; often the contributions were private.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy J. Tilden King of Ellsworth; children, Jennifer King of Ellsworth, Kristen King and husband Shawn Mahoney of Florida, Troy Adams and fiancé Katie Feeney of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Cory, Caitlyn, Evan and Jackson; brothers, Robert King and wife Nancy of Ellsworth, David King and wife Lisa of Gorham, Jeff King and wife Jody of Trenton, Doug King and wife Tracy of Ellsworth; the mother of his daughters, Susan King of Ellsworth; two aunts, Alice Jordan of Ellsworth, Charlotte Wilson of Rockport, NY; an uncle, Stephen Maddocks of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

Friends may call from 5-7 PM, Friday, April 29, at the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, April 30. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the parish hall following the service. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth, following the reception. Those who wish to remember Larry in a special way may make gifts to First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, 2 Church Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605, or to the Ellsworth Historical Society, 40 State Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
