Obituary for Barbara A. Loftus

Barbara A. Loftus
Barbara A. Loftus, 88, died April 14, 2016, at a Bangor healthcare facility after a long illness. Barbara was born in Bangor on June 7, 1927, the daughter of J. Stanley and Mary A. (Harrington) Loftus.
Barbara was educated in public and parochial elementary schools in Bangor and graduated from John Baptst High School in 1945. Barbara earned a B. A. Degree from St. Joseph’s College in Standish, ME, and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Maine as well as other graduate credits from Marquette University in Wisconsin.
For several years, Barbara was a member of the congregation of Sisters of Mercy and taught in the parochial school system throughout the Diocese of Maine. In 1964, Barbara returned to Bangor where, for 22 years, she taught children with special needs at the 14th Street School and Bangor High School from which she retired in 1987. She was a member of several professional and social organizations on local, national, and international levels.
Barbara had been an avid gardener. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, listening to Big Band music, reading mystery stories and historical biographies. She kept abreast of civic matters, current events and politics. She followed the athletic activities of the Boston Red Sox, Bruins, New England Patriots and the Notre Dame Football teams. A highlight of Barbara’s life was a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1997.
Barbara became affectionately known as the “Puppy Lady” in the community because of her devotion and dedication to the puppies at the Pet Menagerie at the Bangor Mall. She loved her “Babies” whom she exercised, leash trained and socialized for 8 years, until the store closed in 1999. Barbara also accommodated friends and acquaintances by house/dog sitting their pets while they were away.
Barbara was a faithful member of the St. John’s Parish community where she was privileged to be a Eucharistic Minister for several years.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Margaret “Gen” Bowser, and her brother, Paul H. Loftus. She is survived by a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be remembered by former colleagues and faithful friends.
Per Barbara’s request there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
