Obituary for Charles Stanley Gould

Charles Stanley Gould
HAMPDEN - The family of Charles Stanley Gould would like to announce his passing. A man after God’s heart, he crossed over the river to meet his Heavenly Father on January 23, 2016 with his loving and large extended family by his side. Charlie was born May 19, 1930, in Hampden, the son of Henry Norman and Ruth Estelle (Pipes) Gould. His faith and love of God was evident through his involvement in the choir at the Hampden United Methodist Church, the West Hampden Baptist Church and most recently at the Community Church of the Open Door. Over these years, he wrote and sang many beautiful hymns that he shared with those lucky enough to hear them, which his family will cherish.

In earlier years, Charlie loved to go clamming on the coast of Maine with all the family in tow, and steam them over a seaweed and driftwood fire. Later on, he built his camp with the help of family and friends on Schoodic Lake where many summers were spent. He also had a country band, Easy Feelin’, for many years and played at the Bangor VFW on Saturday nights. Later in life, he loved to roam out on his woodlot on the Kennebec Rd. in Hampden and putter in his garden and beautiful yard at the family home he and Sally built. Charlie still holds athletic records at Hampden Academy, and went on to play semi-pro baseball with his brother George. He was honored as Male Vocalist of the Year for the State of Maine and served as the Post Commander of the Hampden VFW, all of which he was very proud of.

Charlie graduated from Hampden Academy, class of 1950. He was drafted into the US Army in December of 1952, and married his wife, Sally, on December 28, 1952. After serving his country in Korea, Charlie returned home, working as a mechanic. He spent many years working for International Harvester. Charlie was a member of the local VFW, was a Mason, and belonged to Mystic Lodge 65 in Hampden.

Charlie was a kind, gentle soul, with a quick wit, and an avid story teller. He was always there whenever someone needed help. He had a soft heart when it came to his children, and to his grandchildren, who are going to miss their “Bunka”.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by 3 sisters during their infancy, and 2 brothers, George and Reggie, whom he was very close to. In addition to his wife of 63 years, Sally, Charlie is survived by son David Gould and wife Cindy, and their children Jason and partner Katie, and Adam and wife Veronica, and their 2 children Violet and Edison; daughter Donna Crawford and husband Chip, and their children Justin, wife Alexis, and their son, Justin, Jr., and their daughter Amy-Jo Mongeau and husband Ron, and their son Owen; daughter Coleen Corneil and husband Michael and their 3 sons Dylan, Collin, and Christian; and daughter Sharry Woodside and partner Patrick, and her 2 daughters Christie Rose and Lily; sisters Leah Foster, Norma Binan, Barbara Dolliver, and Marie Dow; and special friend and neighbor Gene Allen.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Milburn, Dr. Picone, the staff in the ED, as well as staff on the 5th and 6th floors of St. Joseph Hospital who helped our family through a most difficult time.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7pm Thursday, January 28, 2016 at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held 10am, Friday, January 29, 2016 at the Community Church of the Open Door, 270 Main Road North, Hampden, with Pastor Mark Fowler officiating. Interment will be at a later date. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the church after the service. Those who wish to remember Charlie in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Community Church of the Open Door to support their Missions ministry.
