BANGOR - Deborah I. Rand, 92, wife of the late Preston Brown Rand, died peacefully January 19, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 22, 1923 in Brewer, the daughter of Joseph Edward Drinkwater, Sr. and Hattie Aurelia (Seavey) Drinkwater. Deborah was educated in the Brewer Schools and graduated from the University of Maine in the Class of 1944 with a B.S. Degree. That same year she worked as a dietitian at Temple University, Philadelphia, for students and servicemen. She also worked as a dietitian in a government cafeteria in Washington, D.C., in 1945. She was active in the Girl Scouts of America as both a Brownie and Senior Scout Leader. She taught at All Souls Church Nursery School 1962-63, the Bangor Hebrew Community Center Nursery School 1964-65, and became a Kindergarten teacher in the Brewer School system in 1966, teaching until 1984. A camper, Deborah and her husband enjoyed camping and traveling in many recreation vehicles over the years. Photography was another interest and she belonged to the Eastern Maine Camera Club, often exhibiting photographs at the Bangor Fair Photo Shows. She was a member of All Souls Congregational Church of Bangor. She has written an extensive genealogy on the Seavey and Drinkwater families in Maine. Deborah was a Literacy Volunteer and also participated in the Penobscot Valley Senior College. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren%u2019s and great-grandchildren%u2019s special events, was an avid reader and loved to tend to her garden. In addition to her husband, Preston Brown Rand, she was predeceased by her sister, Vivian Marie Drinkwater and her brother, Joseph Edward Drinkwater, Jr. Deborah is survived by her children and their spouses: daughter, Linda Rand Clark and her husband, Roger B. Clark of Glenville, NY; daughter, Lorna Harriet Willey and her husband, N. Laurence Willey, Jr. of Bangor; and son, Lindsay Preston Rand and his wife, Susan Braus of Hingham, MA; seven grandchildren, Sarah Louise Clark and partner, Kohta Ueno of Somerville, MA, Matthew Roger Clark and his wife, Carrie of Greenwood Village, CO, Ezra Abbot Rand Willey and his wife, Sara Jean of Bangor, Josiah Leighton Rand Willey of Midland, VA, Monica Jayne Willey and partner, Michael Urcinoli of Hoboken, NJ, Emily Werlin Rand and her husband, Seth of Rochester, NY and Alison Julia Hannum and her husband, Steve of Roslindale, MA; four great-grandchildren, Lola, Elijah, Dahlia and Cecil; and several nieces and nephews. She and her husband were foster parents for a Korean son, Ji Chi An, from 1962-72 with whom they corresponded for many years. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, January 29, 2016 at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, the Rev. Renee U. Garrett/M. Div., minister of Christian nurture and the Rev. Dr. Rex H. Garrett Jr., director of chaplaincy services at EMMC, officiating. A private summer interment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer.
