Obituary for Irving Lord Bowden

HAMPDEN – Irving L. Bowden Jr., 91, died July 21, 2015 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor. He was born June 26, 1924 in Frankfort, Maine. The oldest son of Grace and Irving Bowden, he grew up and was educated in Bangor before enlisting in the Navy to serve in the Atlantic. After being honorably discharged from the Navy he started his career in civil service as a carpenter at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor where he worked until the base’s closure. Irving built his own home in Hampden where he lived while raising his family with his beloved wife Esther. He was a lifelong member of Hammond Street Congregational Church as well as a proud WWII veteran.

Irving was married to his wife Esther for 68 years until her passing in 2014. He is survived by a sister, Nina Hansen of Bangor, his daughter, Peg Pupkis and her husband, Bill of Frankfort; his son, Gary Bowden and his wife, Barbara of Hampden; seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank everyone at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor for the kind and respectful care they provided to Irving during his stay.

A funeral service will be held 5pm Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor immediately following the service Saturday. Private interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
