Obituary for Richard Leonard Cohen

Orland and Bangor - Richard “Butch” Leonard Cohen passed away peacefully September 4th, 2014 at his home in Orland among family and friends. He was born September 7th, 1943 in Bangor the son of Richard D. and Gloria (Marshman) Cohen. Richard lived most of his life in Bangor but later settled in Orland. Richard graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1963. Following graduation he served with the Air National Guard. He spent many years working in the family business, Bangor Rye Bread Bakery on Hancock St., owned by his father Dick Cohen, Uncle Reuben and Aunt Gertrude. As a professional baker he was employed by many local establishments to include Pilots Grill, Lucerne Inn, Hilltop House and Labree’s Bakery in Old Town. He was the proprietor of Pepe’s Pizza of Bangor as well as Cohen’s Bakery in Bucksport.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge. He loved baking, sports cars, motorcycles, country music and spending time with family and friends. He was a very affectionate and loving man making sure that his family knew he loved them tremendously. He and his wife fostered several children. He is predeceased by his father. Surviving, in addition to his wife of 27 years, Iris (Searway) Cohen; his mother Gloria Cohen; two sisters, Mary Long and Debbie Cleaves and her husband Dana; brother, George Cohen; son Richard J. Cohen and his wife Sharon of Maryland; daughters Allyson Cohen and Shelley Cohen Mock. He also leaves behind daughter Amanda Rooney and husband Moose, son Andy Cool as well as son Shane Cohen and daughter Jacklyn Cohen; grandchildren Heather (Allyson’s daughter), Kiefer, Tyler and JB (Shelley’s son’s), Nevada and Niana (Amanda’s daughters), Bryanna and Sylas (Andy’s children) and great-granddaughter Ella (Heather’s daughter). A memorial gathering to celebrate Richard’s life will be held from 5-7pm Thursday September 11, 2014 at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor where words of remembrance will be shared.
