Obituary for John H. Mackintosh

HAMPDEN – John Herbert Mackintosh, 84, of Hampden, died peacefully September 4, 2014 at a Bangor Hospital. Herb was born September 25, 1929 in Ferndale, MI, the son of Helen Herbert and John H. Mackintosh.

He came to Bangor with his family at a very early age aboard the Boston Boat and had fond memories of the voyage. He graduated from Bangor High School, class of 1948, attended Riker College in Houlton and the University of Maine, Orono. In 1950, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed at Grenier Air Force Base in Manchester, NH. In 1953, he started his career in Sales at the International Milling Co. In 1957, he joined the sales department of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. where he met and later married Patricia Ferry. Herb and his brother Don opened Twin City Buick, Inc. in Brewer and after twenty six successful years, he retired in 1987. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Lodge #83, AF & AM of Bangor, Maine Consistory 32 second degree, Anah Shriners, The Veazie Salmon Club, Penobscot Valley Country Club and was a past president the Tarratine Club. Herb enjoyed golf, fly fishing, cribbage and was always a car buff.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia of Hampden; two sons, Peter S. of Hampden and Jon A. of Bangor; two grandchildren, Sean and Erin Mackintosh; his brother, Donald and wife, Janet of Northeast Harbor; two nieces and several cousins. He was predeceased by a young son, Robbie in 1969.

A memorial service will be held 1:30pm Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, following the services Wednesday. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. Those who wish to remember Herb in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Shrine Hospital for Children, Care of Anah Shrine Center, 586 Main Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
