Veazie - Shirley Coombs Hathaway Sibley, 90, passed away April 18, 2014 at a Bangor Hospital. She was born March 31, 1924 in Bangor in the Mace building of EMMC, to Evan “Tot” Estes Hathaway and Mary Frances “Mae” Coombs Hathaway and lived her entire life in Penobscot County. She attended elementary schools in Bangor (Fairmount) and Mattawamkeag, and graduated from Orono High School in 1942. In 1946 she received a B.A. in speech from the University of Maine where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Mu Sigma (Honorary Psychology Fraternity), Phi Mu Sorority, the Maine Masque, and the Modern Dance Club. In 1965, she received a M. Ed from the University. Over the years, she taught in Fort Fairfield, Old Town, Bangor, Lincoln, Penobscot Job Corps, and Husson College. After retirement, she enjoyed many years of Volunteering as a docent at the Hudson Museum at the University of Maine, and singing in the University Oratorio chorus. Shirley was a member of the Veazie Congregational Church from 1958 to the present. Shirley is survived by her husband of 66 years Francis Sibley of Veazie; children Lee Sibley of Wilmington, DE, Glenice Sibley of Bangor, Keith Sibley of Kennebunk, and Julia Epperson of Acton, MA; grandchildren Calvin Sibley of Orlando, FL, Stephen Sibley of Baltimore, MD, Christopher Sibley of Michigan, Jarod Sibley of Sanford, Lila Epperson of Acton, MA, and Georgia Epperson of Acton, MA. Services will be private for the family. Those who wish to remember Shirley in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Bangor Public Library 145 Harlow Street, Bangor, Maine 04401.
