Obituary for Vinal Dennis Severance

Orrington - Vinal D. Severance passed away peacefully, March 31, 2014. He was born in Carroll on May 30, 1925, the son of Forrest and Ethel (McLaughlin) Severance. He attended school in Carroll until 1941, when he moved to Orrington. He was a graduate of Brewer High School, after which he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on the USS Ingersoll during WWII. He was also active in the Naval Reserves for 24 years. Vinal was employed as a lead carpenter and craftsman for many years, working as building foreman for Holyoke & Young, Don Tozier, and C.W. Perry. He loved hunting, fishing, tending his gardens, working with tools, family get togethers, going to yard sales, giving advice, and reminiscing about life. His stories will forever be present in his family's hearts. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Iona (Higgins), of Orrington; his two sons, Ronald and his wife Susan, of Readfield; Anthony (Tony) and his wife Sheri, of Orrington; his six grandchildren, Kim Potter and her husband Dwayne; Sonya Gray; Erin McCormick and her husband Drew; Abbie Severance Pappas and her husband Cassady; Kyle Severance; and Anthony Severance, Jr.. He is also survived by his five great grandchildren, Britani Kramer and her husband Chris; Amber Embleton; Haley Potter; Hannah Geren; and Eden McCormick. Vinal leaves behind many special nieces and nephews and is survived by his sister-in-law, Marguerite Severance. In addition to his parents, Vinal was predeceased by his four brothers and three sisters. The Severances would like to extend heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation to Barbara Haskell, Dan Boutaugh, Betty Arey, Jessica Cook, and Barbara Pomeroy for their support over the years, and especially during the last month. A Graveside funeral service with Military Honors will be celebrated by family and friends later this spring at Marston Cemetery, Orrington.
