Helen P. Grotton, 96, a lifelong educator, passed peacefully March 22, 2014 at a Bangor health care center.

She was born, raised and educated in Presque Isle, Helen was the beloved daughter of Sanford and Margaret (Murphy) Preble, also lifelong educators.

Helen graduated from the Aroostook State Normal School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Maine at Orono while teaching full time.

Helen was a uniquely talented, dedicated, honored, and respected teacher of the very young giving 31 years to the education of hundreds of kindergarten students, at State Street School in Brewer. She was a member of the Maine Education Association, and the First United Methodist Church, Bangor.

She was an avid gardener and Red Sox fan and followed Maine high school basketball as well. An intelligent and strong willed lady, she was a lifelong student frequently taking advanced courses during her teaching career and managing her own affairs and living in her own home for 67 years to the age of 94.

Helen was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Arthur Mayo Grotton in 2002 and numerous family pets which they both adored.

She is survived by her loving sister, Thelma Merritt of Bangor; sons, Gary Smith and his wife, Barbara of Bangor; and Richard Grotton and his wife, Barbara of Cape Elizabeth; a grandson, Christopher Grotton and his wife, Vicky, of Glenburn, and granddaughters, Holly Smith Fernald and her husband, Jim of Holden and Karen Grotton Pelletier and her husband, Hunter of Hampden; Helen loved and enjoyed her six great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Adam Grotton of Glenburn, Caroline Fernald of Holden, Aaron and Isaac Pelletier of Hampden. She held a special place in her heart for nephews, David Merritt and his wife, Rosemary, of Eddington, Wayne Merritt and his wife Barbara-Jill of Appleton; niece Barbara Merritt Wing and her husband, Henry, of Windham.

The family will be forever grateful to Helen’s fellow educators and loving friends for their kindness and love during her journey. The family extends their grateful appreciation to Rick and Lori Slowikowski, Ida Rancourt and Bangor Nursing CNA’s, Christie and Brandy and the nurses and volunteers for their devotion to Helen’s care.

Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor. Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St. Bangor, immediately following the service.
